On 13 October 2011, Mr. Salim Moollan (Mauritius), Chairperson of the forty-fourth session of UNCITRAL, met with Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon at United Nations Headquarters in New York to update him on the current work of UNCITRAL, on the challenges which it faced and on the opportunities which it might seek. Mr. Moollan emphasized UNCITRAL's role as the core institution of the United Nations system for the development of international trade law, while recognizing that there was still room to improve the visibility of UNCITRAL and its texts. He also noted that UNCITRAL was facing significant challenges in its endeavours to continue to fulfill its mandate. As a way of seeking alternative ways to fulfill its mandate within the current constraints, Mr. Moollan noted that UNCITRAL will establish UNCITRAL regional centres to increase the regional presence of UNCITRAL, with the first UNCITRAL Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific to be established in January 2012.
