The second UNCITRAL International Colloquium on Microfinance, following a decision of UNCITRAL at its 45 th session (2012), will take place from 16 through 18 January 2013 at the Vienna International Centre.
After the Colloquium held in January 2011, UNCITRAL has decided to include microfinance as an item for its future work and to devote further research to four issues among those identified at that event: i.e. over-collateralisation and use of collateral with no economic value; electronic money; dispute resolution and secured lending to micro-enterprises and SMEs. The research has highlighted the importance of creating an enabling legal environment for micro, small and medium enterprises that can facilitate their development, particularly in developing and middle income economies.
The 2013 Colloquium will bring together for three days experts from government, private sector, academia and the non-profit sector who will discuss the most relevant features of that environment. Particular focus will be reserved to topics relating to simplified business incorporation and registration; enhanced access to credit for micro-businesses and small and medium-sized enterprises; dispute resolution applicable to microfinance transactions; mobile payments; and winding up processes.
The Colloquium will be conducted on an informal basis. Interpretation in the six official languages of the United Nations (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish) will be available.
Please note that participants will need to collect a grounds pass from the United Nations Security Pass Office in order to access the Vienna International Centre (a passport is required for the release of the ground pass). The Pass Office is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m and is located at the main pedestrian entrance of the VIC at Gate 1.
